The Territory of BAT is administered from London by the Head of the FCO's (Foreign Commonwealth Office) Overseas Territories Department (OTD) who is appointed Commissioner of the Territory. The Head of the Polar Research Section (OTD) acts as Administrator.

 status: 
Overseas British Territory - part of British Antarctic Territory. After the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959, the Islands sovereignty was frozen, and they are free to use by any signatory of the Treaty for non military use.
The United Kingdom maintains a claim to the Islands as part of the British Antarctic Territory, while Argentina claims the Islands as part of Argentine Antarctica (Province Tierra del Fuego Department Antártida Argentina). Each nation maintains a research station on the Islands.
